Cuffy and Leon D - 19c Trumpet

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Cuffy & Leon D are no strangers to the NZ dance music scene having achieved top producer and DJ status in their home country. Credited with releases on a number of regional labels over the past decade, Cuffy & Leon D are poised to storm the global house community with their crisp, hook-laden productions and musically inspired sounds.

A top club track that's more than ready to get the dancefloor grooving properly while bringing the widest smile to everyone's face, 19c Trumpet (pronounced "nineteen cent trumpet") grabs the listener by the gut right from the start and doesn't let go. With its tight and smooth trumpet work deftly performed by fellow kiwi Toby Laing, the funk continues to build and rise in intensity and there's nowhere to go but up. It's about time we had this much fun on the dancefloor! On remix duty for his Melon Dub we have none other than Red Melon honcho Dano bringing out his signature tech-funk for a turn around the deeper, dubbier side of the club. Rounding out the slab of wax is Toby's cool trumpet in acapella form for those of you wanting to lay the horn over your own mix, at an effective and proper length for a DJ tool at that.

Press Reviews

It's good to come across this cool groove that, thanks to a bassline not a million miles away from Kid Crme's 'Hipnotising', sounds like a Belgian boy taking a break in San Francisco. In reality, Cuffy & Leon D are actually from New Zealand, and if this smoothly funking, trumpet edged jam is what they're busting in the clubs out there, my record box is packed and ready to go. Dano pops up on the flip with a denser dub that makes more use of the 'Long Train Running' guitar hook, and there's a little extra garnish in the shape of a 'Trumpapella'. 3.5/5 (Phil Cheeseman, DJ Magazine, 25 July-7 August 2003)

There has to be at least one good Latin-style trumpet-driven house tune released each summer and if nobody else manages it, then New Zealanders Cuffy & Leon D have turned in a decent enough effort here. The trumpet line is pure Latin-Caribbean party style and the rest of the track is built to match, although we're talking swinging percussion and funky b-line-meets-driving grooves rather than balls-out party house. Dano strips things down and teases the track out in typically accomplished style for his dub, although personally I would have liked to hear a little bit more of the trumpet line in there. Still, there's always the 'Trumpapella', which is exactly as the title describes. 3.5/5 (Tim Irwin, DJ Magazine, 11-24 July 2003)
