::| NEWS :: ARCHIVE
It's Old News Below you'll find an archive of most (if not all) of the news bits from the Red Melon front page. Be aware that it is actually "old news". Where appropriate we've disabled time sensitive links. Have fun! Red Melon and Darren Emerson celebrate Dano's birthday! ::: posted Feb 17 2005 Tonight! Thursday, February 17 at The EndUp We're kicking off a new bi-monthly slot at Mixed Elements "WindUP" at the End Up. 3rd Thursdays in February, April, June, and August. And we want to make it an extra special event as it's also Dano's birthday, the best we could do is a night at The End Up with DJ's Dano, JZ and none other than the most celebrated guest that Red Melon has in it's stables, all the way from London to join in on the birthday mayhem, Darren Emerson !!! Darren came all the way to San Francisco for the occasion and is only here for this one Thursday night and then he'll be nothing but local folklore. So you had better be one of the people with the first hand knowledge of this legendary line up. You won't need much arm twisting if you have had a chance to make it to one of the Watermelon parties with Darren and the boys. And if that ain't enough, you'll be able to paddle Dano 35 times. That alone is worth the price of admission! Philadelphia acid master Josh Wink to play Melon on May 7th ::: posted Mar 29 2004 Thanks to all that came down and made our first night back at Melon a success on March 19th. Everyone loved the space and it was great to see the enthusiasm again out on the dancefloor! Of course, this was just a warm up for a truly spectacular event we have in store for our loyal Red Melon fans. Friday, May 7 2004 will bring you a special appearence of the legendary acid king, Josh Wink at MELON. Red Melon is proud to finally be able to showcase one of the biggest success stories in the underground house movement. Ask yourself how many globally respected, underground artist-producer-DJs have turned-down offers to tour with U2, and you will likely draw a short list. Josh Wink is such an artist -- one who is unassuming, yet enjoys a cult following and who places artistic integrity above all else. Owner of Ovum Recordings and remixer of mega-talents such as Sting, Depeche Mode and Ladytron, Josh has made only rare appearences in San Francisco, so don't miss out. Josh is supporting a new album entitled "20 To 20" it's available now at your favorite underground dance music store. If you are serious about your Red Melon parties, this Melon is not to be missed! Get there before 11:00pm to take advantage of an earlybird cover charge of $10 at San Francisco's newest venue, Mighty, located at 119 Utah St at 15th Street. Mighty is a beautiful renovated warehouse with a touch of technology and art and the massive sound system that made Club Townsend a San Francisco favorite. All of that plus cheap drinks too! You can't go wrong. Trust us. Alongside Josh for the evening will be Red Melon DJs Dano and JZ, 10pm to 5am. RM19 - Ross Couch - Deep End E.P. ::: posted Feb 22 2004 Hailing from Glasgow Scotland, Ross Couch is donning the Red Melon hat for the month of March with the release of The Deep End EP. After success with a recent release on BlakTrax, Couch’s EP offers three solid big-room progressive house tracks to thunder across the dance floor. Check 'em out in our catalog section or download them from iTunes for only 99 cents each! |more... Red Melon Export goes global on Apple's iTunes Music Store ::: posted Feb 17 2004 Red Melon and Apple have inked a deal and begun the encoding process necessary to provide Red Melon fans around the world access to the entire back catalog in pristine digital clarity. A massive six volume series will be available on iTunes in March titled Red Melon Export. Each volume will consist of a selection of 10 tracks from the studio vaults and will sell for $9.99. "Never before has this music been available in a format that everyone could enjoy - only limited runs of vinyl" says label boss Dano. "Now everyone can have the collection. And DJ’s will be pleased to know the tracks are unmixed and ready for work duty in clubs." Don’t miss it! Not into iTunes? Expect a traditional CD release of the Red Melon Export Series later this year. Harlem Zip Code - iTunes Launch! ::: posted Feb 17 2004 Red Melon is pleased to announce the release of its first full-length album. A beautifully crafted collection produced by former Paper Recordings stars Harlem Zip Code. With a decidedly San Francisco vibe, Colour World Soul has an exceptional range of moods and grooves from the Rasta flava'd "Fling Up Your Wig" to the warm down tempo soul found in "Where Will You Go?". A diverse group of vocalists also appear on the album including Corina Joseph of Basement Jaxx fame. Initially, Colour World Soul is available exclusively as a digital downloadable album album on iTunes Music Store February 5th, 2004. Using Apples iTunes software, you can immediately burn CD’s for personal use. Expect a full CD release late Spring. Disco Diversions - Check Stores Now! ::: posted Oct 14 2003 Hot on the heals of his recent outing on Red Melon ("You Gotta Love"), Tuhin Roy hits the wax with a vengeance, this time joining forces with Dano as they bring you this sun drenched two-tracker aptly entitled "Disco Diversions". Be sure to hassle your local purveyor of fine vinyl if it's not in stock yet. |more... RM16 - "You Gotta Love" - now shipping! ::: posted Mar 28 2003 Coming fresh on the heels of our last release "Toons", we have an amazing record from a very good friend of ours Tuhin Roy called "You Gotta Love". Little do some of you know, but Tuhin has had success in the music industry before, and this effort is a direct result of his infatuation with the SF house music scene. After an initial release as a white label, this record is already in the bags and on the charts of such dj luminaries as Chris Duckenfield, David Duriez, Rob Mello, Inland Knights and Fred Everything to name a few. We expect this record to blow up big, so be sure to get yours ASAP. Our distributors should be getting this out to the stores in March. Let us know if you're having problems finding it locally, and we'll help out from this side. |more... All Aboard Watermelon!! ::: posted Aug 2 2003 The day is finally here! We're scrambling around like crazy people already today getting prepared for tonight's Watermelon boat party. We're really excited, and it sounds like you are too from the buzz we've been hearing. Hopefully you already have tickets, but if you don't, you can still purchase them at BPM (573 Hayes @ Laguna, SF) and online at TicketWeb.com today until about 1:30pm. We'll have a waiting list going by around 5:30pm, so get there early to assure your spot partying out on the bay with us. We're going with a tropical tiki sort of theme tonight, so throw on that grass skirt and coconuts, and get ready to cut a rug. Everybody groove aboard! |more... Watermelon Tickets Selling Fast! Get Yours Now! ::: posted July 17 2003 Guess what? Time for another Watermelon!! It'll be hard to beat having Darren Emerson at our last boat party in April, but we're doing our best to continue trying to one-up ourselves. And this particular summer blowout happens to fall on none other than JZ's birthday so it's guaranteed to be ON! Saturday, August 2nd we are proud to present yet another artist from London's Underwater Records stable, the man behind the song "It Just Won't Do" which stormed through the Balearic Isles last year, none other than Darren Emerson's right-hand man, Tim Deluxe! His latest single "Less Talk More Action" is set to repeat the success once again this summer. We enjoy having the Underwater guys aboard so much that it's even been suggested we start calling the boat party UnderWatermelon! As if that weren't enough...we have local favorite, movie star, and muckraker to the masses, Monty Luke, along with Watermelon residents Dano and birthday boy JZ. Rumor has it that rabid fans are booking their flights from as far away as New York City for this one (you know who you are)...so you'd better buy your tickets now before it's too late. Tickets on sale now at BPM (573 Hayes @ Laguna, SF) and online at TicketWeb.com. |more... Watermelon Wowza! ::: posted Apr 25 2003 Whoa. That was some boat party. Those of you diehard Watermelon fans that braved the occasional rain shower out on the bay know what I'm talking about. The DJs, the volunteers, the fans...even the Red & White staff knew that we were in for something special as soon as people started boarding the boat. The look of excitement and anticipation on everyone's faces was like a virus that infected the whole boat, and the fevered pitch didn't break until we docked again at 11pm. Even longer for those of you who stuck it out for the official Afterparty at Anú. Special thanks go out to Darren Emerson, Dano, JZ and Carlitos for providing the musical bliss, and to our crack team of volunteers for creating the most beautiful Watermelon atmosphere to date. Stay tuned for future Watermelon Boat Party adventures coming to a Bay near you. ;) Check out the pictures! |more... Yummy Melon Goodness! ::: posted Jan 9 2003 Thanks to all you party troopers who made it out last Saturday; so soon after New Years too. A great time was had by all to say the least. JZ opened the night downstairs with an awesome set (editor: I'm listening to it now!) followed by another corker of a set from Dano. Our special guest for the evening David Alvarado wowed the crowd with Final Scratch. The upstairs lounge was super-loungy thanks to Tal M. Klein and his SF Lounge crew. t vs T. performed two awesome live sets with Patti Cakes spinning some freaky robotic electro in between. Lesson learned for the evening: more padded mats needed for lounging, because you all seemed to be into it! ;) |more... We have none other than superstar dj Chris Udoh (Tigerhook/Philly) returning to grace the decks in the main room. Those of you that were here for his last appearance just over a year ago (also our very first night at DNA) know that this will not be a night to be missed. With residents Dano and JZ getting things rolling, you'd better come prepared for a musical journey that will have your body moving all night long. And if you need to jump off that train for a little side trip? Upstairs we have a veritable EndUp explosion with guest djs Jellybear (KitKat) and Simon (Come-Unity/KitKat). Let's try to get caught up on our past couple MELON parties at DNA Lounge. A couple weeks ago, we had an amazing lineup. Cracker Jack helped us bring you FC/KAHUNA (City Rockers) all the way from the UK and now we see why they're called the "keepers of the acid house flame". They brought a truly unique acid flavored house set that none of us were ready for, but all of us wanted more of. Our guests (and super cool guys) Cuffy & Leon D all the way from Wellington, NZ followed up with a slamming tech house set that kept us dancing until the wee hours. Those Kiwis really know how to make people move. Last month we had lots of fun downstairs with Pauli P from San Diego and local hero Monty Luke, while Tracy and Charlotte "The Baroness" held court in the upstairs lounge with their own bump n' grind. Thanks to all the MELON FAITHFUL...we truly appreciate your good vibe and readiness to dance. Spread the word! |more... MELON:LAX this Saturday! ::: posted Oct 25 2002 Dano and JZ will be making their way down to LA for their bimonthly residency at Spundae:Circus. Dax, our top notch visuals producer will be tagging along this time to provide a little bit of our hometown vibe to the house room for all of our SoCal fans. |more... MELON Shakin' ::: posted Sep 11 2002 Last Saturday's MELON was off the hook! We're always grateful for all of our regular melonheads that make it out to our monthly gig at DNA Lounge, but it never ceases to amaze us how many new people we see every month, and how you're always ready to shake your ass! SF deck-veteran Monty Luke, our guest dj from San Diego Pauli P and resident Dano had the whole dance floor mesmerized all night long and begging for more at 4am when we had to pull the plug. But that didn't seem to stop people from crowding the upstairs lounge to groove to Tracy and Charlotte "The Baroness". Thanks again to everyone for such a fun night! DNA should have the audio webcast archived for another week or so... check it out! |more... Joe Silva Rocks The Bay ::: posted Sep 11 2002 Everyone was looking forward to the return of Joe Silva, producer of "Free" and MELON veteran...but Joe on a Watermelon boat party?! Oh yeah! Those of you that made it out Aug. 23rd know what I'm talking about. All the guys had amazing sets as as matter of fact... and combined with the strangely temperate, almost warm night out on the bay and all of your smiling, grooving selves... Needless to say it was a night to remember. Thanks again to all of you that made it out, and thanks to our crack team of volunteers who pulled it all together. The exact date of the next Watermelon is up in the air right now, but we're working hard to pull together something special for you. |more... World Clique ::: posted Aug 16 2002 It's high time we take the wraps off of the not-so-new-anymore Red Melon Bulletin Board System. It's been lurkin in the background gathering dust ... I mean ... undergoing stringent usability testing. ;) It might not be golden yet, but it's time we put it out there to see what you think. The thought being this would take over where our current guestbook left off. You can ask us questions, give us a piece of your mind, post a shout out to your homies, talk with other fans around the world. On top of all that, it'll make things a lot more difficult for spammers, which is a good thing. An email address is required for admin purposes, but you get to decide how much info about you get's out there. When you get a free moment, head on over and register, cruise around, post a message, let us know what you think! |jump... Watermelon Tonight! ::: posted Aug 16 2002 Have you gotten your tickets for tonight's Watermelon Boat Party out on San Francisco Bay? Joe Silva (producer of Free) and our Watermelon veterans Dano, JZ & Carlitos are definitely going to be rocking the boat, so get onboard and experience the boat party people have been talking about for the past 2 years. A small amount of tickets are still available in person at Clear Music (SF), Primal Records (Berkeley) and online at Ticket Web. Once those are gone, you should still come down to Pier 43 1/2 because we'll have a handful of tickets available for sale there as well. We start boarding around 9pm, and depart at 10pm sharp! Everybody groove aboard! |more info... Last Watermelon of Summer ::: posted Aug 05 2002 Boy do we have a treat for you! For our last Watermelon boat party of the Summer, we have none other than Joe Silva, dj extraordinaire, and producer of the Red Melon hit record Free. Joe hails all the way from the icy hinterlands north of the border in Winnipeg, Canada, so he has a lot of spare time on his hands to get up to no good. With Joe and Dano playing downstairs, get ready to have your hackles raised by some truly wicked house music. Joe has rocked MELON on two separate occasions, so you definitely don't want to miss this one. Upstairs JZ and Carlitos will be spinning that special blend of "liquid-panty-remover" music you've all come to expect on the top floor. |more... Hot August Nights ::: posted Jul 31 2002 Can you believe it's almost August already? Neither can we. But sure enough, we're nearly there. To start things off with a bang, we have MELON on it's new (slightly easier to remember) night, the first Saturday of the month. Our special guests from south of the border Uriel and Alexis of Bounce (Mexico City) will be joining residents Dano and JZ in the main room, while Sf-Vibe takes over the upstairs lounge this month with Norman Stradley and Andy Flack. On Friday, August 9th we have a little party we're throwing at Sit!o (the old Up&Down club) called Motiv with Dano and JZ dabbling in some slightly off center tunes along with our guests Patti Cakes and Erin with their mix of electro and breaks. Watch out for rogue Robots! On Saturday, August 10th we have m:lounge on it's new night (second Saturdays) at underground speakeasy Buzz9 where Red Melon and friends like to let their hair down. Friday, August 23rd we have superstar dj/producer Joe Silva headlining the last Watermelon boat party of the summer (tickets on sale now). But there's no rest for the weary...Joe and the guys will be jetting off the very next day for our bimonthly residency in the house room at superclub Spundae Circus in LA on Saturday, August 24th. Whew! Better start taking those vitamins!! |more... Your Night Life is in Jeopardy! ::: posted July 23 2002 It seems like it's more often than not lately that our government is trying to quietly push legislation through to make things as difficult as possible for the night life and electronic music community. The best things you can do is to educate yourself, voice your opinion, and get active. To this end, we've provided some links to information regarding current and pending issues facing our community on our "links" page in the "Do Something" section. You *can* make a difference. |more... Watermelon-erific ::: posted Jul 23 2002 Last Saturday we set sail with a lighter than usual boat load of partiers, but that was quickly forgotten as the music got going and the fog pulled back to reveal a particularly mild San Francisco night on The Bay. Our stellar lineup included residents Dano and JZ downstairs, with Monty Luke, N8 Castro and resident Carlitos upstairs. All the DJs had amazing sets; if you stood in one spot, every few minutes a friend would walk up saying "JZ is killing it right now!" or "N8 blew my mind!" or "Isn't Monty sexy with that new haircut?" etc. It was hard to decide which floor to hang out on, because you knew you were missing something elsewhere...friends, views, music. Thanks to everyone that made it out, and a special thanks to our amazing group of volunteers who put it all together. |more... Watermelon July 20th: Get your tickets now! ::: posted July 16 2002 After last month's mega fun boat party, we just couldn't wait any longer for another one. Right around the corner, on July 20th, we have our next installment in Watermelon mayhem. Dano and Jay will be tearing it up downstairs. Upstairs accompanying resident Carlitos, will be local heroes Monty Luke and N8 Castro. Get your tickets now so you don't miss the boat. As always, promotion will be minimal, so make sure your friends know the deal. Everybody groove aboard! |more... fredness has left the building ::: posted Jul 10 2002 The past three years have been really great for all of us here at Red Melon Records. Dano, JZ and fredness make a superb musical team, and together with Chris, they throw a fantastic party and run a top notch record label. Life is full of twists and turns, however, and things do change. After much deliberation, fredness has made the choice to leave Red Melon to pursue his solo music career and his recent engagement to Sarah. Although we've reached a crossroad, this certainly isn't the end of this great relationship, nor is it an end to fredness' DJ appearances. Keep an eye out for fredness at events in and around the city, and of course at future Red Melon events too! This Saturday's MELON will be his last "official" night as a resident, so come on out, have some fun and wish him well. Best of luck with all your future endeavors, Fred!!!!!! MELON:LAX - Circus with a Smile ::: posted Jun 26 2002 It's time again for Red Melon's bimonthly residency in the "House Room" at mega-club Circus Disco in Hollywood. Not only are we mobilizing our forces in the LA Area, but we have a huge crew from SF heading down this weekend as well. So if you happen to be anywhere near Circus on Saturday night, come on down and help us make that room shake! On tap for the evening will be residents Dano & JZ with a special appearance by Q-Burns. |more... What's going on?! ::: posted Jun 19 2002 Time to catch up on what's been happening in the Red Melon world. The last MELON @ DNA was epic, I'm sure everyone would agree. Resident JZ opened the night in style followed by tech-house perfectionist DJ Filter (Phil Williams) visiting us all the way from Wellington, New Zealand. Rob Mello, our special guest from London, got right down to business and showed everyone he can get dark, techy and funky all at the same time with what was, in his own words, "one of the hardest sets I've played in awhile." And on top of all that...they're two of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Red Melon Records label head Dano closed out the night with a banging set that kept the dance floor pumping until we had to shoo everyone out the door at 4:20. Pictures online now! In other news, Dano's latest piece of vinyl Aural Reports vol. 1 has been selling like hotcakes and showing up on some big name charts recently. We're ramping up production, so expect to see some more choice toons to be released in the near future. |more... Whata-melon ::: posted May 28 2002 Jeesh...did you guys see what I saw? There were a hell of a lot of people having a good time at the last Watermelon boat party. Our fans, the DJs, the bartenders were all lovin' it. Even the security guards couldn't help but dance. Our special guests Jonny Knight and Tres Manos ruled the dance floor upstairs with resident Carlitos. Meanwhile downstairs Dano's epic set was followed up by yet another from JZ. The smooth flowing beats and warm glowing vibes were hard to let go of at the end of the night...so most of us made it over to the End-up to finish up the night with an encore set by Dano & JZ at Funktion. Thanks to everyone that came together to make it happen. Stay tuned for pictures and word about the next Watermelon boat party! |more... MELON keeps on Rockin' ::: posted May 28 2002 If you made it to our last MELON at DNA, then you know how much fun everyone had grooving to the musical stylings of DJ Gabriel (pictures); our second guest in as many months all the way from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Well the second Saturday of June is right around the corner, and do we have a treat for you. None other than Rob Mello, fresh off the release of his funky latest Fantasize. Come on down and show him how San Francisco likes to groove. Arrive before midnight with a flyer and a friend to take advantage of 2-for-1 pricing. |more... Watermelon X - It's Your Party ::: posted May 22 2002 Happy Wednesday! Ticket sales are going along nicely (thank you very much), but we still have a few left. They're available at Clear Music on Valencia near Market in SF, or online at TicketWeb. This is your chance to make it your party! You have 3 days left to make sure all of your friends have gotten their tickets. So start pestering them now! Saturday will definitely be a night to remember. And if you need to keep your feet moving when we dock at 2am, head on over to Funktion at The EndUp...free entry with your Watermelon ticket! |more... Watermelon X - Still a few tickets left! ::: posted May 25 2002 The good news is we're nearly completely sold out. Online ticket sales and Clear will stop selling tickets shortly, so your only chance to get on the boat if you don't already have tickets will be to come down to the Pier. We'll have a waiting list if any extra spaces become available, so get there early to assure your place onboard. We start boarding just after 9pm, but try to get there early so we can get you ID checked, patted down and boarded as quickly as possible. Remember we're at Pier 43 1/2, which is just to the left of where we used to board. We leave at 10pm sharp, so don't be late! Look for this landmark. We suggest taking a cab or public transportation. If you need to drive, you can park on the street for free, or for a fee at the Pier 39 garage. Dress fabulously, but in layers because it's liable to be cool outside and warm inside. Leave unnecessary valuables at home...and lastly...party responsibly. We want you to have a lot of fun, and to get home safely. See you onboard! |more... Coming up next! ::: posted May 03 2002 Hello friends of Red Melon! Time for a little update on what's coming down the Red Melon turnpike of fun. This Saturday, come down to Buzz9 to get your groove on with Fredness and our guest this month Mark Little. The party is called m:lounge, although we're considering changing the name because we can't seem to squeeze much lounging in. Word on the street is that it's the fav party for quite a few groovers, so check it out. Last month was an epic night at DNA. The Space Cowboy's were holding court upstairs, while downstairs JZ and Dano got the night rockin' and Groovedoctor (aka Mark Rajesh) really laid down some scorching tunes. This month on May 11th, we have his partner in crime, Gabriel. Not to toot his horn or anything, but he's a force to be reckoned with, so get ready. Kuala Lumpur is shakin' up MELON! Is everyone ready for Watermelon? After much deception and intrigue, our first Watermelon boat party of the year will set sail May 25th, Memorial Day weekend onboard Red & White's Royal Prince. This is a smaller boat, so we expect to sell out even faster than usual, so don't wait to the last minute to get your tickets. On sale soon, so stay tuned! |more... Someone Please Call A Groovedoctor! ::: posted Apr 09 2002 Oh wait...we already did. We have a very special guest in town this Saturday for MELON @ DNA. Goovedoctor (aka Mark Rajesh) will be making a house call all the way from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He'll be administering heavy doses of a medicinal sound called house music, to soothe your mind, body and spirit. All the Red Melon boys are back from the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach and from touring through Mexico, so it'll be a solid night of four headliners downstairs. And as if that weren't enough, The Space Cowboy's will be truly "UPINIT!" as they take over the the upstairs and turn it into their own home on the ranch. Do a little spring cleaning by coming down to shake out all those cobwebs that are clouding your world, and get ready for what's sure to be a crazy summer! 2 for 1 deal: Bring a flyer (or a printout of the flyer image located here) and a friend before MIDNIGHT to receive "2 for 1" admission! |more... Melon in Miami - WMC 2002 ::: updated March 19 2002 This year's Winter Music Conference (March 23-27) is fast approaching and we've decided not to let another year go by without bringing a bit of our own sound and vibe to sunny Miami Beach this time around! Not So 'Undercover' for JT & Lance ::: posted Mar 12 2002 Whoa! That was a fun MELON at DNA on Saturday night! Dano and JZ are on still on tour in far away places like New Zealand, Malaysia & Bali...so it was all up to fredness to get the night rolling. JT Donaldson and Lance Desardi of Undercover Agency took it from there, and kept the dance floor packed and groovin until closing time. Seemingly there was quite a buzz about them playing at Melon, because a lot of you made it out in the pouring rain to check them out. Thanks for coming out and stay tuned for a picture update soon! |more... Thanks Joe! Get ready for Mark! ::: posted Feb 19 2002 Happy Tuesday everyone! Last week we saw the triumphant return of Joe Silva to Melon @ DNA Lounge. There was a lot of excitement about his return after his previous stint behind the decks, and boy did he live up to everyone's expectations. And to top the night off, around midnight, a crack team of Cake-Ninjas swooped in and stopped the party with a quick Happy Birthday for the ever youthful Fredness. Awww...isn't he cute? This Friday, Bless This Rocket House veteran Mark Grant will be headlining House Beautiful at the inimitable Sno-Drift. We know a lot of you are under the impression that Sno-Drift isn't really *your scene*, but we want to dispel that misconception. You like our vibe right? Who doesn't like freakin' Mark Grant? Same ol' Red Melon party...just a different channel. And to encourage you guys to do a little flippin', we're offering 50 free spots on our guest list. If you're lucky, you'll get to skip to the front of the line, and say "Hello nice guest list person! I'm on the list!" We do this every month for both Melon and HB, so if you don't win this time, come on down anyway and try your luck again next month! Let's show Mark what a real Red Melon party is all about.
