Chris Brown

Chris Brown, who goes by DJ Brownie or just Brownie on a label, is an English-born DJ who made his name in Los Angeles. He started out more than thirty years ago in the city's original dark and dirty underground and after-hours venues, and those nights led to years of bookings across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Production came in the early '90s with his longtime friend Paul Grogan, owner of Rampant Records. Rampant, which Grogan and Brown set up with DJ Doran, became the outlet for a string of their aliases: Immigrant, Gorilla Pimp, Faithealer, Mr Funkster, Brownie and DJ Brownie. As Immigrant they released Gosh / Solo Flight in 1994 and Housarockin' / Too in 1996.

On Red Melon he teamed with Dano as Trakshun for Slipped Disk, the label's second record, in 1997. It is mid-to-late-'90s West Coast jackin' house in two takes: a bouncing Original, and Dano's Acid Mix, which runs continuous 303 filter work from start to finish. Both cuts came out on vinyl and digital.

Brown has kept working ever since. Lately he releases club tracks on breaks and bass labels and produces music for TV, film, video games and commercials.
