David Coleman
David Coleman is a San Francisco house producer and DJ whose story is bound up with the city's crews and partnerships. He started a DJ collective called Spiral Jive with Christopher Lawrence and Thomas Michael, and in late 1996 he joined forces with the live keyboardist Sen-Sei as Kinetic Grooves, which became the heart of his work as both a duo and a label. The two later recorded together as Atwater Syndicate for Deep Dish's Yoshitoshi, too. Pairing Coleman's DJ instincts with Sen-Sei's freehand keys, they made funky, deep, tribal house for local floors.
In 2000 Kinetic Grooves released Shack Traxx, with Coleman, John Howard and Sen-Sei. From 2001 into the mid-2000s his productions also found a home on Jah Love Recordings, the San Francisco dub-house label, often with Sen-Sei, Dub Theory or the vocalist Rootz.
The same year as Shack Traxx, he joined Dano and Sen-Sei as Shack Attack for Red Melon, two West Coast deep-house cuts for the booth. Use What U Got turns a pitched-down vocal chop into percussion over dubby electric-piano stabs, and Something Wonderful rides a bright electric-piano and organ riff, later picked for Dano's The Sound of San Francisco mix in the Tech House Phenomenon series.
