DJ Chus

Jesús López Esteban, DJ Chus, was born in Madrid in 1971 and started DJing at sixteen. In 1994 he opened Teatro Kapital, and he was also a resident at Kadoc in the Algarve. Pablo Ceballos, who grew up in the same part of Madrid, remembers him as one of the city's main house DJs, a resident at one of its very first house clubs, at the time Ceballos was sending him demos.

After years of house and trance under various names, Chus founded Stereo Productions with Ceballos and manager Carlos Caliço. The idea behind it was the Iberican Sound, named for the peninsula: tribal drums from home set inside house music, and a way to put Spain on the global map while the records were all coming from New York and the UK. Chus & Ceballos became the label's engine. Chus also worked with David Penn as Chus & Penn, and with Joeski on "El Amor," an early hit for Maya. In 2002 Chus & Ceballos made "Deep Architecture" with Dano and "On the Strength" with Tony Hewitt. Chus later founded Redolent Music and has remixed Madonna, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. Since Stereo's twentieth anniversary in 2020 he has gone back to his solo work, including Afro house and indie dance.

On Red Melon he is the Chus in Penn & Chus on From Madrid with Love, released in 2001. The record has the Distraction Dub, the long tribal Stereo Mix, and Dano's SF Love Mix, which opens beatless on drones and pads before the groove comes in.
