Melon — Red Melon Reunion (April 5) & Ellen Ferrato (May 3), 2003, DNA Lounge

Melon — Red Melon Reunion: Fredness, Dano & JZ — April 5, 2003, DNA Lounge

Red Melon's residents were Dano (Dan Hruby), who founded the label in San Francisco in 1996, Jay Zimmermann (JZ), who joined about a year later, and Fredness (Fred Zirdung), who became the critical third member. Dano found house in Copenhagen in late 1989, came up through San Francisco's Wicked and Come-Unity scenes, and still runs Red Melon. JZ is a selector first, running from deep and soulful house through tribal and tech house, and he took the party south as Melon:LAX and out onto the Bay with the Watermelon boat parties. Fredness covered vocal, deep, tech and funky house, and his residencies at DNA Lounge and 1015 Folsom with Dano and JZ set what Red Melon sounded like on a San Francisco floor.

Melon — Ellen Ferrato — May 3, 2003, DNA Lounge

Ellen Ferrato is a San Francisco house DJ known for Sugar, the Saturday club at The Stud, and for the 2nd Sunday party. Mark Freeman's history of The Stud credits Club Sugar, "featuring DJ Ellen Ferrato," with bringing deep house and a new sound system to the bar. DNA Lounge billed her as "Sugar / 2nd Sunday" for this Melon night with JZ and Dano, and she had also played the lounge at DNA's ((( thump ))) in October 2002.

Red Melon

Dano (AKA Daniel Hruby) is the Founder and owner of underground dance music label Red Melon Records. Founded by Dano in 1996, with Jay joining about a year later and Fredness becoming the critical third member, the label showcased the burgeoning West Coast Sound movement that reigned in the new century of underground rave and club music. Dano, a DJ and producer of techno and house music, has headlined major clubs around the world, including London's Fabric, Singapore's Zouk, and with label Partner JZ (Jay Zimmermann) produced Underground events Melon and Watermelon boat parties from 2000 onward.
