Joe Silva
Joe Silva is an electronic music producer, film composer and DJ based in Winnipeg, Canada. In the '90s he released music as X Nation, with records such as the Love Forever, Nowhere and Free Your Mind EPs, and he still puts out house and techno on his own label, Purespace Recordings. Alongside the club records he has a second career in scoring, with soundtracks for Black Field, Infectious, The Sisterhood, H&G and Trashbot Apocalypse.
Silva first appeared on Red Melon in 2001 with Free, two early-2000s deep and tech house mixes built around a hypnotic "free" motif. The Red Carpet Mix works metallic, resonant chord stabs and echoing "Free" chops over heavily swung open hats. The Wanna Be Mix turns a pitched-down "wanna be... free" vocal into rhythm over minimal chords and pads.
More than two decades later he came back to the label to remix Dano's Now You're Gone. Dano's original pairs a rolling tech-house pocket with a melancholy vocal hook. Silva's version runs warmer and later at night, opening up the stereo field with dub-leaning delays and holding a hypnotic groove. The remix connects one of the label's early voices to its current run.
