Joeski

Joe Flores was born in Brooklyn and raised in Corona, Queens, a short ride from the New York underground. He started DJing in 1989, and in 1991 he was booked at Wunder Bar in Manhattan. Over the next few years he became one of the founders of The Chocolate Factory and worked the city's big rooms: Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium and NASA. He played with DJ Keoki at the East Village after-hours club Save the Robots and took the Friday "Together" residency at the Roxy, playing alongside Danny Tenaglia, Louie Vega and Roger Sanchez. A residency at Groove Society in Montreal came next.

In the late '90s he built his own studio, and in 2000 he came out with tracks and remixes on Siesta, Junior Boys Own, Ministry of Sound, Tango and Electrik Soul. He was part of the 6400 Crew circle with Onionz, Hipp-E, Halo, Master D and Tony. In 2001 he launched Maya Records. Its first release, "Hustler's Revenge," was an immediate hit, and "El Amor" with DJ Chus followed. Since then he has produced and remixed for Defected, Bedrock, Nervous, Cajual, Poker Flat and Crosstown Rebels, worked with Dajae, Dirty Vegas and DJ Sneak, and held residencies in Barcelona and at Stereo in Montreal.

On Red Melon he made two records with Dano. Chikko is built around a "keep on movin'" hook. It has an eleven-minute vocal 12-inch over tough swinging drums, a clean acapella for layering, and Dano's gritty, lo-fi Melon Dub. Then, as The Twisted Pair!, they cut Twisted Horns, built on a filter-modulated horn stab, with the Original, Dano's Twisted Dub and the ten-minute-plus Twist of Melon Remix. Twisted Horns went into Carl Cox's top ten, and the Original still shows up on DJ charts.
