RM011 Joe Silva - Free
Joe Silva's Free, from 2001, was the label opening its doors beyond the founder's own productions, and it remains a deep, hypnotic treat. Two mixes work one simple motif. The Red Carpet Mix rides swung open hats and raw claps under a sub-heavy bounce, with metallic, resonant chord stabs pushed through heavy filter automation and echoing "Free" chops working as percussion. The Wanna Be Mix turns a pitched-down female "wanna be free" into rhythmic punctuation over minimal seventh chords and ethereal pads, building to a double drop. Early-2000s West Coast deep house, understated and endlessly mixable, from a producer who would return decades later.
