Ross Couch's The Deep End EP, released in 2003, delivers three deep-house cuts with West Coast bounce and plenty of room for the mix. Hearts and Minds swings on punchy kicks, roomy claps and bongo bounce under a thick round bass, with warm filtered stabs and energetic "Hey!" shouts marking the peaks. La Musica, in its 12" version, locks a syncopated sub from bar one and uses its spoken title to mark the sections before lush pads bloom on the breakdown. The title track turns melancholic, layering sigh chops, minor-ninth stabs and string pads. Polished, wide and soulful, deep house done right.
